Between February 8, 1990 and July 31, 1991, 590 renal units in 520 patients were treated by extracorporeal shock wave litrotripsy (ESWL) with the EDAP LT ? 01 + lithotriptor.
The results were obtained as follows
1. The average patient age was 44 years, with a range of 7 to 92 years. The sex
ratio was about L67 1, 325 (62.5%) in male and 195 (37.5%) in female patients.
2. The locations of stones were kidney in 283 cases (48%) including 25 cases of staghorn
calculi, ureter in 303 cases (51.4%) and bladder in 4 cases (0.6%).
3. The average numbers of treatment were 3.4 sessions and average treatment time was 36.9 minutes.
4. Of the 590 cases, 61 cases (10.3%) complained severe pain and required analgesics.
5. The success rate of treatment-ended patients (including particles less than 4 mm in size) were 94.4%.
6. The pre-ESWL additional measures were used push up procedures in 21 cases and double J stenting in 34 cases.
7. The post-ESWL complications were persistent gross hematuria more than three days in 12 cases, high fever (> 38 t) in 15 cases and steinstrasse in 26 cases.
Therefore, we conclude that extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy with EDAP LT ? 01 + lithotriptor was considered to be safe and effective procedure for the treatment of uninary stones.
